The Royal Society of Medicine has today announced the appointment of Helen Gordon as Chief Executive. Ms Gordon joins the RSM from the Royal Pharmaceutical Society where she has held the position of Chief Executive since 2010.

At the RPS she was responsible for developing the role, work and impact of the Society as the newly dedicated professional body for pharmacists after the organisation split from its regulatory function. Prior to joining the RPS Ms Gordon spent five years as Chief Executive of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists. She has also held the post of CEO at Hillingdon Hospital and Queen Mary’s Sidcup NHS Trust.

The Royal Society of Medicine is one of the UK’s major providers of post-graduate medical education and each year organises over 400 academic and public events that provide a multi-disciplinary forum for discussion and debate. As Chief Executive, Ms Gordon will be responsible for delivering the strategy agreed by the RSM Council and championing initiatives that meet the Society’s charitable remit. She will be responsible to both the RSM President and Council.

Babulal Sethia, President of the Royal Society of Medicine, said:

We are delighted to confirm Helen Gordon as the new RSM Chief Executive. Helen has a deep understanding of the UK healthcare sector and has a clear vision for the Society. Her engaging and collaborative nature will complement the skills of our executive team and trustees as we move forward.

Speaking about her new role at the RSM, Ms Gordon said:

I look forward to joining the RSM, an organisation with considerable reputation for its provision of postgraduate development and networking opportunities for doctors and an increasingly wide spectrum of health professionals. Its wide range of inter-professional and specialty learning opportunities is both relevant and important to health and science, today and in the future. I'm honoured to be joining the RSM at an important time in its history.

Helen Gordon will take up her RSM role in March 2017.
