Reaching a fair deal – The RACGP Employment Kit, was launched in Brisbane today at the Second Joint Conference of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) and the Australian Association of Practice Managers (AAPM).

“General Practitioners, especially new Fellows and General Practice Registrars, have advised the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners that they need advice when it comes to entering into new work arrangements,” said Professor Michael Kidd, RACGP President.

The RACGP Employment Kit has been designed for use by general practice employers, employees, contractors and registrars, and was developed under the guidance of the RACGP National Standing Committee on General Practice Advocacy and Support.

The RACGP Employment Kit provides information to general practitioners looking for help with negotiating an employment contract.

“The RACGP believes that mutually satisfactory employment contracts foster better professional working relationships within the practice, and can benefit patient care and lead to improvements in doctor and staff satisfaction,” said Professor Kidd.

“General practitioners need to carefully consider employment contracts to ensure that the expectations of both the practice and employee doctors are covered.”

General practitioners asked the RACGP for a checklist of the sorts of issues they should take into account. To assist general practitioners, the kit suggests that general practitioners should consider issues such as:

  • remuneration;
  • leave entitlements;
  • work-related expenses reimbursement;
  • Occupational Health and Safety issues;
  • the practice environment; and
  • Professional Development and Continuing Education.

The kit includes a template for developing a possible payment level, and tips for negotiating the best outcome for both parties when negotiating an employment contract.

“The RACGP wishes to thank United Medical Protection (UMP) for their sponsorship of this resource and the American Academy of Family Physicians and the General Practice Registrars’ Association for granting permission to reproduce their work in this kit,” said Professor Kidd.
