His Holiness the 14th Dali Lama will visit Florida International University on September 22, 2004 to give a lecture titled Compassion – The Source of Happiness. The FIU lecture will be on the last day of his four-day visit to South Florida.

The Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, visited South Florida for the first time in April of 1999, when he came to FIU to receive an honorary doctorate in divinity. He is the exiled leader of the Tibetan people and is recognized by them as the eincarnation of the Principle of Enlightened Compassion. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1989.

“It’s a superb honor to have the Dalai Lama among us for the second time in only five years,” said FIU President Modesto A. Maidique. “He’s coming at a particularly sensitive time in our history as a nation and I look forward to his message.”

President Maidique credits Religious Studies Chair Nathan Katz with having secured this second visit to South Florida. Katz is a friend of His Holiness and was instrumental in having him return for a longer visit that includes several public events and a lecture at the University of Miami.

The lecture at FIU will begin at 9:45 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at the Golden Panther Arena, located at FIU-University Park. The lecture is not open to the public. Complimentary tickets will be distributed in early September to students and others in the University community. Ticket holders should plan to arrive early; doors open at 8 a.m.

The media is welcome to cover the event. For details and to request a media credential for the FIU event, please visit www.dalailama.fiu.edu

The public events are being organized by the non-profit organization Osel Dorje Nyingpo, headed by His Eminence Khempo Yurmed Tinly Rinpoche. To learn about the Dalai Lama's activities during his South Florida visit go to www.dalailamamiami.com
