The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) has announced its partnership with the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) for the implementation of the Retail Alert Network (RAN), an online information hub and analysis resource for crimes occurring in and around retail outlets and local communities.
“The Drug Enforcement Administration looks forward to working closely with NACDS to aid in the development of the Retail Alert Network for the collection and dissemination of incident data for all reported robberies, burglaries and shoplifting so that thefts and store losses will be quickly identified and reported,” stated William J. Walker, Deputy Assistant Administrator, DEA Office of Diversion Control.
The DEA is working with NACDS to provide the Retail Alert Network with an electronic version of the loss reporting form for controlled substances (DEA Form 106) that will increase the accuracy and ease of reporting store losses by the retail community.
“This partnership allows retailers across the country to quickly, efficiently and easily report local crimes and allows the DEA to almost immediately update their databases and alert systems in an effort to stem the tide of retail thefts,” said Steve Perlowski, Vice President, Industry Affairs for NACDS. “We are happy to take another step in this win-win proposition with retailers and law enforcement nationwide.”
The Retail Alert Network was developed in 2003 by the National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS), Cap Index and ChainDrugStore.net to create a system that would work in conjunction with local, state and federal law enforcement agencies to track and report retail thefts so that patterns of criminal behavior possibly may be identified and thwarted. Funding for the development of the Retail Alert Network site was provided by a grant from Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals.
