Thomson Reuters to supply real-time clinical surveillance solution to Bryanlgh Health System

BryanLGH Health System has selected Clinical Xpert CareFocus from Thomson Reuters to play an integral role in its ongoing efforts to improve clinical quality and patient safety.

CareFocus is a real-time clinical surveillance solution that automatically identifies high-risk hospital patients by screening laboratory results, vital signs, medications, diagnoses, age, gender, and other data. When patients meet the hospital's preset "high-risk" criteria - suggesting, for example, that they are suffering from a decubitus ulcer or staph infection - CareFocus notifies clinicians via their mobile device or web portal.

"We selected CareFocus because it enables us to identify specific clinical conditions within our patient population and provide care to those patients who need it most, before their conditions become more serious," said Nancy Bargen, clinical applications analyst for BryanLGH Medical Center.

BryanLGH will initially use CareFocus to improve its clinical performance related to Core Measures conditions across the health system. Eventually, use will extend to clinicians in the pharmacy - for medication management - as well as infection control and other departments.

"CareFocus will contribute to our overall quality improvement strategy," said Janet Endorf-Olson, manager of clinical quality improvement at BryanLGH Medical Center.

This extends BryanLGH's use of the Clinical Xpert suite through 2014. The health system currently uses Clinical Xpert Navigator to improve clinical workflow by aggregating critical patient data and delivering it in real-time to clinicians via mobile and web-enabled devices.

"We are excited about adding CareFocus to our existing Clinical Xpert agreement, because it not only helps us save lives but it also provides a great return on our IT investment. This single solution will maximize the clinical data residing on separate systems and it will be used by clinicians in multiple departments across BryanLGH to improve quality and performance," said Rich Marreel, chief information officer at BryanLGH.
