Prescription assistance program helps Iowa residents to save money on drugs

Iowa residents have saved over $800,000 on prescription drugs through Iowa Drug Card since the launch of the free statewide prescription assistance program. The program, which offers free discount drug cards to Iowa residents, was launched in June, 2008. Every resident of Iowa is eligible to participate in the prescription assistance program.

Former Hawkeye's Head Football Coach Hayden Fry has been the voice and face of the program since its inception last year. His illustrious career will be honored September 4th by the kick off of the annual Fry Fest and the dedication of Hayden Fry Way in Coralville. Coach Fry led the Hawkeyes to three Big Ten titles, three Rose Bowl appearances, and 14 bowl games. He was inducted to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2003. "Healthcare is such an important topic in America today. I encourage all residents to take advantage of this opportunity to help offset the rising costs of prescription drugs," said Coach Fry "The Iowa Drug Card is open to all residents and everyone should be able to benefit from this program at some point."

Iowa Drug Card was launched to help the uninsured and underinsured residents of Iowa afford their prescription medications. However, the program can also be used by people that have health insurance coverage with no prescription benefits, which is common in many health savings accounts (HSA) and high deductible health plans. Additionally, people who have prescription coverage can use this program for non-formulary or non-covered drugs. This includes people enrolled in Medicare Part D.

The card offers pharmacy discounts at more than 50,000 drug stores around the country. Iowa residents can download a free card, search drug pricing, and locate participating pharmacies at www.IowaDrugCard.com.
