H1N1 flu vaccines and other resources for remaining healthy to be offered at Pennsylvania Farm Show

The Department of Health is offering free H1N1 flu vaccines and other resources for remaining healthy at its exhibit at the Pennsylvania Farm Show, which runs through Jan. 16.

"Preventing disease is the best way to improve health outcomes and lower health costs," said Secretary Everette James. "This year, our Farm Show exhibit highlights immunization, smoking cessation, physical activity and nutrition programs that educate citizens on simple steps they can take to stay healthy."

At the exhibit, department staff and representatives of outside organizations will provide information on topics including tobacco education, cardiovascular health, vaccine-preventable disease and lead safety. Participating groups include the American Heart Association, American Red Cross, PA Coalition Against Domestic Violence and the Organ Donation Program. The booth will also showcase "Andy the Ambulance," an interactive robot that teaches public safety, first aid and emergency medicine.

The department will also provide H1N1flu vaccine, free of charge, in the Farm Show's East Hall Atrium on Monday, Jan. 11, through Friday, Jan. 15, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Also, the Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis) vaccine will be available during this time. Children under 18 years of age must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Appointments are not necessary.

"While the number of cases of H1N1 flu has decreased, a third wave of disease in either late winter or early spring is likely," added James. "We still recommend that citizens get vaccinated against H1N1 to protect themselves this year and begin to build immunity for future flu seasons."
