Preserve Innocence Calls for Approach That Respects the Sovereignty of the Family

"This report demonstrates the anti-religious, anti-parent, and anti-family bias of Planned Parenthood's approach to children," stated Emmett McGroarty, Director of Preserve Innocence, an initiative of the American Principles Project focused on protecting the innocence of children.  Mr. McGroarty's comment referred to a new report from International Planned Parenthood Federation entitled Stand and Deliver: Sex, Health, and Young People in the 21st Century.  The Report's stated intent to "catch them while they're young" typifies IPP's radical positions on the teaching of sexual morality to children and on suppressing the principal and primary role of parents to teach their children on such matters and to choose, if they are so inclined, to raise them within a faith tradition.

The Report engages in a conclusory attack on religion and on the Catholic Church in particular but fails to cite any authority on the subject.  For example, it levels a general disparagement of "many religious teachings [that] deny the pleasurable and positive aspects of sex," but utterly fails to cite any documents or teachings of any faith on the subject.

"To call this approach 'education' is a farce," said Mr. McGroarty.  "It is an agenda -- the same agenda that underlies so much of sex education: to undermine the role of parents as the principal and primary guides to their children on issues of spirituality, morality and sexuality.  It is based on an elitist presumption that parents are untrustworthy and incapable of that role and that the state should take over."

"Our recent Innocence Report examined this trend and called for a new approach to sex ed that respects the sovereignty of the family and the proper place of parents in teaching their children.  This IPP Report only emphasizes the need for such a new approach."

American Principles Project further calls on The Netherlands -- the sponsors of the Report -- to immediately repudiate it.
