EAU honours urological experts at 25th Anniversary Congress

On 16 April 2010 the European Association of Urology opened its 25th Anniversary Congress. During the ceremony, several urological experts were honoured with awards for the outstanding work they did for the urological community. EAU Secretary General Per-Anders Abrahamsson handed them out.

The EAU Willy Gregoir Medal is the highest honour the EAU can bestow on a urological professional. It was awarded to Prof.
Frans Debruyne (NL) for his outstanding work as a urologist who initiated new technologies in his clinical practice.

Supported by an educational grant from LABORIE, the EAU Crystal Matula Award is the most prestigious prize given to a young promising European urologist under the age of 40 who has the potential to become one of the future leaders in academic European urology. The award was awarded to Prof. James Catto from Sheffield ( UK). He is an internationally recognised expert within the fields of bladder cancer and epigenetic gene regulation.

The EAU Frans Debruyne Lifetime Achievement Award 2010 was awarded to Prof. Remigio Vela Navarrete from Madrid (ES), a multitalented urologist devoted to the promotion of urology among medical students in Europe.

Supported by an educational grant from KARL STORZ GMBH & CO. KG, the EAU Hans Marberger Award is presented for the best European paper published on Endoscopy in Urology. The review committee, consisting of a selection of members of the EAU Scientific Committee, Professor M. Marberger and Professor F.. Hamdy select the winning paper. Yesterday, the award was handed out by Professor Abrahamsson to Dr. Martin Marszalek from Vienna (AT) for his paper 'Laparoscopic and Open Partial Nephrectomy: A Matched-Pair Comparison of 200 Patients' published in European Urology 55 (2009) 1171-1178.
