Rep. Dingell opposes proposal for drug reimportation

Rep. John Dingell, D-Mich., will stand in the way of a proposal by Sen. Byron Dorgan, D-N.D., to attach a drug reimportation amendment to Dingell's food safety bill, which Dingell said "could derail the whole food safety effort," The Hill reports. "Adding to the charged politics is the widespread assumption that the Obama administration, which has made food safety a priority, may intervene behind the scenes against the amendment. The measure would allow the importation of drugs that are sold in countries such as Canada for much cheaper than they are in the U.S." Dorgan says the food safety bill could be the last hope to get the drug reimportation issue through Congress since he is retiring at the end of this session (Pecquet, 5/30).
