NewsGuard 100/100 Score

Recombinant Data Corp., a healthcare data warehousing and clinical intelligence solutions provider, today announced that Centocor R&D, Inc., a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, won a CIO 100 Award for tranSMART, a research data management system delivered through a partnership with Recombinant that enables drug research and development data sharing across Johnson & Johnson.

“Congratulations to the entire team at Johnson & Johnson for their commitment to the success of tranSMART.”

The tranSMART system aggregates data from diverse sources and formats into a central repository, and enables sharing across boundaries between scientific disciplines, development phases, and business groups. Scientists engaged in translational research, physicians, informatics professionals, and executives are able to access information from a single source, reducing redundant work, facilitating collaboration, and encouraging hypothesis formation. The solution was deployed in an innovative shift to reduce costs for disk storage and access to scalable computation resources by hosting through the Amazon EC2 Elastic Compute Cloud.

The tranSMART team included Sándor Szalma, senior research fellow and program manager, John Boles, IT lead and application integration specialist, and Bob Gruninger, IT manager and data steward, each at Johnson & Johnson. The system was created and implemented over the course of an 18-month collaboration between Johnson & Johnson and Recombinant Data Corp. Recombinant utilized an agile-development methodology, rapidly delivering the initial prototype and additional enhancements in 3-5 week iterations.

"tranSMART has garnered numerous accolades from across the industry for its ability support the future of translational medicine. Recombinant and Johnson & Johnson are hopeful that the capabilities of tranSMART will be available to a broader consortium of commercial and academic organizations involved in drug development," said Peter Emerson, CEO, Recombinant Data Corp. "Congratulations to the entire team at Johnson & Johnson for their commitment to the success of tranSMART."

Each year, the CIO 100 Awards honor companies that demonstrate excellence and achievement through an innovative use of technology that delivers competitive advantage to the enterprise. The award ceremony will occur at the CIO Symposium on August 24, 2010 in Ranchos Palos Verdes, California.
