The Premier healthcare alliance and 26 of its more than 2,400 member hospitals have been named to the 2010 InformationWeek 500, a list of the top technology innovators in the nation. Premier was ranked 72 on the 2010 list, which was revealed last night at the InformationWeek 500 Conference in Dana Point, Calif.

“Value analysis is often inadequately and inefficiently deployed across the nation, leading to redundant activities, fragmented purchasing and suboptimal results”

"For 22 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology," said InformationWeek Editor in Chief Rob Preston. "As we start to emerge from the worst recession in decades, the IT focus is now on driving growth—new sources of revenue, new relationships with customers, even new business models. This year's ranking placed special emphasis on those companies and business technology executives leading that charge."

Premier received the award for its leadership in leveraging information technology in significant and innovative ways to support its alliance members.

In collaboration with members and through data integration, Premier developed a solution to assist with value analysis, a process hospitals use to assess new products prior to using them in the treatment of patients. The solution, ValueAdvisor®, helps member facilities effectively evaluate product and treatment options across the alliance, allowing for rapid cost savings and quality improvements.

"Value analysis is often inadequately and inefficiently deployed across the nation, leading to redundant activities, fragmented purchasing and suboptimal results," said Joe Pleasant, Premier's senior vice president and chief information officer. "By leveraging a combination of supply chain and clinical outcome data and by enabling collaboration, Premier members can address the inefficiencies in their current value analysis process to leverage alliance-wide knowledge in ways not possible in the past."

ValueAdvisor, part of Premier's ValueConnect™ program, is a Web-based application that offers hospitals an automated solution to manage their value analysis processes, and realize clinical and financial return on investment. Product functionality is geared toward the management of requests, access to comprehensive information to support evaluations, and goal-oriented measurement of results.

With the nation's most comprehensive repository of supply chain and clinical outcome data, Premier is able to go beyond a single-institution view and provide both the aggregated data and results from a large population of providers with ValueAdvisor. Its collaboration framework solves an industry-wide problem to drive acceptance and change, and streamline value analysis processes.

InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing, and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America's best-known companies.

The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as they spotlight the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
