Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN) today announced the availability of Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder on the iTunes App Store, expanding its healthcare suite of speech solutions for smartphones and building upon the recent success of Dragon Medical Mobile Search. With Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder, Nuance is introducing a new level of clinical documentation flexibility by enabling mobile point-of-care dictation that is connected to speech-enabled transcription platforms, eScription and Dictaphone Enterprise Speech System, and the fully-outsourced Nuance Transcription Services offering.

“Clinicians with iPhones can easily download the app without IT department support. Also, the quality of dictation capture and speech recognition accuracy on the eScription platform has been great, showing no difference from telephone dictations. We expect additional adoption across the hospital, mostly driven through word-of-mouth.”

By applying its award-winning speech recognition and dictation capabilities to Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder, Nuance empowers clinicians with a documentation method that they prefer, dictation, on a single, popular device that many clinicians demand, the iPhone. According to Manhattan Research, 72 percent of U.S. physicians now use smartphones and by 2012 adoption will increase to 81 percent. With Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder, clinicians across an enterprise can conveniently and efficiently dictate into the iPhone at the point-of-care or on-the-go without compromising the quality, accuracy or turnaround time of their reports.

"As the demand for mobile, point-of-care solutions grows, so does Nuance's commitment to deliver innovative healthcare applications for smartphones and other leading mobile devices that advance and improve the mobile clinical experience," said Janet Dillione, executive vice president and general manager, Nuance Healthcare. "We believe the interaction of speech technology and healthcare mobility is crucial. Nuance's Dragon Medical Mobile solutions speed and simplify the use of mobile devices and applications in healthcare settings, as well as improve the overall clinical experience for both the care provider and patient."

As part of the Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder workflow, clinicians no longer need to dictate from a workstation, landline phone or carry a separate mobile dictation device. Rather, clinicians can initiate rapid medical record creation with the iPhone's touch-based interface, which allows efficient dictation anytime and anywhere. Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder was designed specifically for high-quality and reliable mobile dictation capture to optimize the eScription, Dictaphone Enterprise Speech and iChart workflow platforms. Dictations are instantly and wirelessly uploaded to Nuance's secure data center for distribution to background speech recognition processing and transcription; this process happens significantly faster than with traditional handheld recorders, helping to improve finalized document turnaround time.

"Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder has been our hospital's first introduction to dictation via a smartphone. Members of our hospitalist group and pulmonary physician assistants have been using the App as part of their clinical documentation workflow; feedback has been positive," said Jean Blain, CMT, HIM Manager, Transcription Services at Eastern Connecticut Health Network. "Clinicians with iPhones can easily download the app without IT department support. Also, the quality of dictation capture and speech recognition accuracy on the eScription platform has been great, showing no difference from telephone dictations. We expect additional adoption across the hospital, mostly driven through word-of-mouth."

Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder includes many advanced features designed to enhance the dictation process for clinicians and ensure fast, accurate clinical documentation. The App:

  • Leverages the WiFi and 3G wireless capabilities of the iPhone.
  • Protects all patient information with a full range of security features including advanced encryption as outlined in the HIPAA guidelines.
  • Allows clinicians to download and install the software via the iPhone App Store, minimizing the IT resources required to deploy this tool across the enterprise.
  • Provides administrators the ability to centrally manage user accounts through EMon®, the eScription administrative console or Enterprise Explorer, the Dictaphone Enterprise Speech System administrative console.

Dragon Medical Mobile Recorder is the second of four planned medical mobile solutions from Nuance that are designed to help streamline clinician workflow at the point-of-care; details on these apps can be found in this previous press release: Nuance Extends Power and Experience of Mobile, Voice-Enabled Documentation and Search to the Healthcare Industry; Unveils Dragon Medical Mobile Apps for Smartphones.
