Sharp HealthCare is known for leveraging IT to support its culture of quality service, innovation and excellence. But as the industry faces new reforms affecting patient care and management of patient data, Sharp is relying on BMC Software (NASDAQ:BMC) for an integrated approach to maintain its reputation of IT innovation.

“To create that integrated picture, myriad systems have to work together seamlessly”

The conversion to electronic medical records has become a top IT priority at Sharp. The organization is working to provide medical personnel with a comprehensive picture of each patient's history to improve the quality of decisions for emergencies as well as ongoing treatment. Making those records accessible requires a complicated network of systems that have to work together seamlessly.

"To create that integrated picture, myriad systems have to work together seamlessly," said Linda Hill, manager at the Sharp HealthCare Technical Assistance Center. "We can't afford downtime of any system that clinicians depend on for making medical decisions. That's where BMC Software comes in. BMC solutions are helping us monitor our systems and solve problems quickly before the problems affect the quality of health care delivery."

To achieve greater automation, tighter integration across systems and richer insight into relationships among IT components and business services, Sharp refined its IT service management strategy (ITSM) to include:

  • BMC's ProactiveNet Performance Management solution for performance, availability, event and impact management;
  • The BMC Atrium CMDB to provide a complete, accurate and up-to-date view of the people, processes and technologies that comprise the IT environment; and
  • BMC's Remedy IT Service Management Suite to replace internally developed help desk applications.

"The BMC solutions are about facilitating our IT processes so that the IT organization can support end users in delivering superior patient care," Hill said. "BMC is integral to helping us document and comply with our processes so that we can provide high-quality business services."
