CR still under consideration as House GOP vehicle to defund health law

Republicans may use legislation funding the government the rest of this fiscal year also as a vehicle to defund implementation of health care reform, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) said Monday. Boehner said there's "been a lot of discussion" about possibly adding to the GOP's continuing resolution an amendment that would end any automatic funding to implement President Obama's new health reform law. Rep. Steve King (R-Iowa) has been a chief proponent of one such measure (O'Brien, 2/14).

The House debate beginning Tuesday over a 2011 GOP spending measure could take on a bit of a Wild West atmosphere. The bill will be read, paragraph by paragraph, on the House floor. When a member of either party wants to offer an amendment, he or she can rise and do so — as long as it's relevant to the paragraph being read. At that point, any lawmaker can speak for five minutes — for or against the amendment (Bendavid, 2/14).
