MedVirginia to showcase interoperability solutions at HIMSS11 Conference

MedVirginia has announced its participation in the Interoperability Showcase™ at the HIMSS11 Annual Conference & Exhibition in Orlando, Florida next week. As part of the conference, MedVirginia will be showcasing three unique demonstrations, as well as meeting with attendees in Booth #5187.

The three demonstrations are:

VLER - Kiosk #11

In 2009, President Obama announced the Virtual Lifetime Electronic Record (VLER) initiative in order to improve the care and services to military personnel and veterans by facilitating the flow of medical records between the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), and civilian healthcare providers. MedVirginia became operationally live with VLER in late 2010 and provided connectivity with civilian healthcare providers in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia. In this demonstration, MedVirginia will show how it is leveraging its open-source CONNECT gateway to the Nationwide Health Information Network (NwHIN) in order to enable exchange of Continuity of Care Documents (CCDs) with the VA and DoD.

SSA - Kiosk #16

Using the NwHIN, the Social Security Administration (SSA) is able to electronically process requests for medical information in order to expedite disability claim determinations. Compared to the traditional process utilizing human intervention, this automated process dramatically reduces the time required to do so. MedVirginia's project has achieved two significant milestones: being the first Health Information Exchange (HIE) live on the NwHIN, and gaining a significant return-on-investment for the hospitals who have participated. MedVirginia will demonstrate how it is utilizing its CONNECT gateway to the NwHIN to send CCDs to SSA.

DIRECT - Kiosk #26

The Direct Project uses the MEDfx Lifescape™ provider portal to demonstrate the exchange of clinical information and the patient summary record. This illustrates the secure exchange of CCDs from providers who use Lifescape™ to MedVirginia-based care managers using MEDfx's Patient-Centered Medical Home Information System. Within this process, the Stage 1 Meaningful Use criterion is met through the use of the patient summary record. The harmonized NwHIN CONNECT and the Direct Project protocols will be demonstrated leveraging Verizon's certificate authority and national provider registry.

Interested HIMSS attendees are encouraged to stop by the Interoperability Showcase and meet MedVirginia executives who will be conducting the demonstrations.

In addition, MedVirginia is co-exhibiting with Troutman Sanders, at booth #5187 where attendees may meet with MedVirginia's CEO, Michael Matthews, and Troutman Sanders' Health Care Practice Group Leader, Steven Gravely, as well as other Troutman Sanders and MedVirginia team members.
