Xerox helps healthcare clients with technology and consulting services to improve quality of care

A growing number of healthcare organizations are turning to Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) for technology and consulting services in support of Electronic Health Records (EHRs). In the past year, more than 50 clients hired Xerox to advise them on everything from securing meaningful use funding to building Health Information Exchanges (HIEs).

Xerox is also investing in the future of healthcare information technologies, appointing Markus Fromherz, a scientist and former director at the Palo Alto Research Center, as chief innovation officer for healthcare.

"We know our healthcare clients are committed to staying focused on patient care, while we improve the flow of information through the healthcare work day," said Fromherz. "That includes onsite research by our ethnographers and 'dreaming sessions' with customers to brainstorm how Xerox technologies can improve quality of care and reduce cost."

Today, healthcare providers and states are working with Xerox to comply with regulations put forth under the HITECH and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act:

• Electronic Medical Records (EMRs): ACS, A Xerox Company, consults with hospitals like Botsford Hospital in Farmington Hills, Mich. and Cooper University Hospital (CUH) in Camden, N.J., on EMR solutions to get the most out of meaningful use stimulus funding - from helping select a vendor to deploying, integrating and supporting technology. ACS is leading implementation strategies for McKesson's Paragon solution at Botsford and Epic's EMR clinical information system at CUH.
• HIEs: Wyoming is one of several states ACS is helping to implement a Web-based EHR/HIE system. Working with the Wyoming Department of Health, ACS will help integrate the solution with the state's Medicaid Management Information System (MMIS), other EHR systems, designated laboratories and the state's immunization registry.
• State Level Registries (SLRs): Five states are currently working with ACS to establish SLRs, which allow providers that participate in Medicaid programs to apply for and receive meaningful use federal funding via a secure website.

As the largest provider to manage all document and business process needs within a healthcare organization, Xerox continues to expand its services with the recent acquisition of WaterWare Internet Services Inc. to build EHR and computerized physician-order-entry systems using Xerox document imaging and content management technologies.
