The Hill: NARAL Faces Mounting Abortion Restrictions In States
Abortion-rights groups are facing tough choices about where to challenge new restrictions on abortion and other reproductive health services in the wake of a sharp increase in both state and federal legislation on the issue. Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, a Republican, is expected to sign a bill that aims to cut off Planned Parenthood's funding in the state, and legislatures nationwide are considering a range of other proposals to limit access to abortion (Baker, 4/28).
National Journal: Abortion Bills Advance In Florida Legislature
Florida's legislature is on its way to passing one of the most comprehensive packages yet seen at the state level to limit women's options for abortion. After Republican members of the Florida House pushed through six bills on Wednesday that would limit access to abortions for women and teens within the state, the Florida Senate on Thursday afternoon passed its version of two of the measures — a bill and a proposed constitutional amendment that would ban the use of public and insurance exchange money for abortions, The Associated Press reports (Fung, 4/28).
McClatchy/Midwest Democracy Project: Abortion Foes Rack Up Another Win In Kansas
Abortion foes scored a third major win Wednesday when a bill to regulate abortion clinics cleared the Kansas Legislature. The Senate voted 24-15 to approve a bill requiring the state's three abortion clinics to be inspected twice a year, including one unannounced review (Brad Cooper, 4/28).
Planned Parenthood also continues to be in the news:
Fox News: Several States Take Up Fight Over Defunding Planned Parenthood
After Republican efforts in Washington to defund Planned Parenthood fizzled this month, several states are now in a race to become the first to strip the organization of all taxpayer money. Kansas, Indiana, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Texas are among the states who are taking up the fight that the GOP-led House couldn't finish when the White House and the Democratic-controlled Senate risked a government shutdown to protect Planned Parenthood from Republican knives (Clark, 4/28).
CBS: (Video) Rick Santorum To Mitch Daniels: Defund Planned Parenthood In Indiana
Former Sen. Rick Santorum, who has criticized Gov. Mitch Daniels for his call for a "truce" on social issues, is now calling on his potential 2012 rival to sign a controversial bill to cut $3 million in funding to Planned Parenthood in Indiana. "That's an organization that has a very sordid history and founding and one that I still think focuses in on activities that a lot of people have moral objections to," Santorum said in an interview with CBS News political analyst John Dickerson Thursday (Delgary, 4/28).
