UBM Canon's Medical Design Excellence Awards has announced the winner of the Medical Design Excellence Awards (MDEA) Lifetime Achievement Award. This award honors an individual whose contributions during a long career have had a demonstrable impact on technological, business, and cultural advancements in medical devices.

Selected by the entire UBM Canon Medical Content Team and the Medical Device and Diagnostic Industry Editorial Advisory Board, Alfred E. Mann, Chairman and CEO of MannKind Corporation, has been chosen as this award's first recipient.  Mr. Mann has dedicated the past 42 years to the development of medical device technologies. His current company, MannKind Corporation, is a diversified biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel therapeutics and drug delivery technologies for treatment of diabetes, cancer, autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.  MannKind's lead product, AFREZZA, mimics the insulin kinetics of a normal pancreas, creating a new therapy paradigm for diabetes.

Mr. Mann stated, "I'm really honored to receive this award. Over my career, I've received a number of awards but this one is especially important because it's associated with MD+DI, which is the premier chronicle of the device industry."

Mr. Mann has been involved in creating different technologies that have enabled a deaf child to hear, a blind person to see, and a crippled person to walk.  When asked what inspires him most, Mr. Mann said, "What drives me is trying to find solutions that enable people to live longer and more fruitful lives."

Rich Nass, Director of Content of UBM Canon's medical content team said, "I am very excited to announce Mr. Mann as this year's Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.  His work has greatly influenced the advancement of medical device technologies.  The Lifetime Achievement Award is soon to become one of the industry's most honored awards."

Mr. Mann holds B.A. and M.S. degrees in physics from the University of California, Los Angeles and honorary doctorate degrees from the University of Southern California, The Johns Hopkins University, Western University and the Technion Institute (Israel), as well as, Research Professor, University of Southern California, and Adjunct Professor, Dept. of Bioengineering, University of California Los Angeles.  Mr. Mann is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and has received numerous honors and awards from the private and public sectors.

Mr. Mann will be present at the 2011 MDEA awards ceremony during the MD&M East conference and tradeshow in New York on June 8 to accept his award.
