HHS awards $40 million in public health grants

The funds, which are from the health law and will go to states, will help support health departments.

HHS handed out another $40 million in public health grants Wednesday -; partly, but not completely, from ACA funds -; to help beef up health departments and train the public health workforce. The money includes funds to help health departments track the quality of their public health services and spread the use of the most successful practices, according to the HHS announcement. It will also fund 10 new Public Health Training Centers to train up to 500,000 public health workers in issues like environmental health, nutrition and cultural competency. The top award winners include New York and California, which received $2.2 million each, and Florida, which will get $1.7 million (Nather, 8/31).

Texas received about $1.3 million of the "Strengthening Public Health Infrastructure for Improved Health Outcomes" grants announced by the Obama administration on Wednesday. The grants to health departments in Dallas County, Houston, San Antonio and the state health department are mostly funded from the federal health care overhaul law, according to a release by U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius (Garrett, 8/31).
