The much-criticized long-term-care insurance program included in the health care law is under attack again, this time by Republicans who charge that Obama administration officials were warned by government actuaries even before the law was passed that the program appeared financially unsustainable. Nonetheless, top officials at the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) didn't acknowledge the problems with the relatively obscure program or attempt to make it more sound, the Republicans alleged. A report issued by a working group made up of both GOP senators and House members is based in part on HHS e-mails requested by congressional Republicans. In the e-mails, HHS officials discuss the Community Living Assistance Services and Support (CLASS) program (Norman, 9/15).
