Texas data breach affects medical records of 4.9 million patients

The breach, which involved the personal and medical records of military patients and their families, happened when backup tapes from an electronic health care record were stolen from a data contractor's car.

A massive data breach, in which the personal and medical records of millions of military patients and their families were compromised, happened when the records were stolen out of a data contractor's car in San Antonio, officials told Reuters on Thursday. The information for some 4.6 million active and retired military personnel, as well as their families, was on back up-tapes from an electronic health care record used to capture and preserve patient data from 1992 through September 7 of this year, according to Science Applications International Corp (SAIC) (Forsyth, 9/29).

The records of about 4.9 million Military Health System patients have been breached by a contractor for the military's Tricare Management Activity insurance carrier, according to a Tricare statement. The breach by Science Applications International Corp., McLean, Va., was reported to Tricare on Sept. 14 and involved backup tapes of a military electronic health-record system that was in use from 1992 through Sept. 7, 2011, according to the statement (Conn, 9/29).
