Health, medicine used by Israel as 'instrument of control' over Palestinian people

In this Lancet opinion piece, Ruchama Marton, president and founder of Physicians for Human Rights – Israel writes, "Everything one can say about the health-care system in Palestine was summed up by the physician and political leader Haidar Abdel-Shafi … in September, 1993. He said: 'We cannot take care of health and education as long as we live under occupation.'"

She writes, "Now, as the Palestinian Authority waits to hear whether the U.N. Security Council will back its bid for full membership, the situation is much the same. Israel has used health and medicine as an instrument of control and oppression of the Palestinian people and leadership in the occupied Palestinian territory," adding, "There is no way that a future Palestinian state … can handle the health-care system (or any other socioeconomic system) if the Israeli occupation and control continues" (10/15).

I'm a member of Kaiser Permanente, and it pleases me to see Kaiser's imprimatur on this news. Zionist Israel's entire enterprise of occupation and dispossession of the Christians and Muslims of Palestine is based on domination and control. Health and medicine, along with education, are obviously crucial elements of this despicable state of affairs, but they are accompanied by so much in addition: land theft, deprivation of life-essential water resources, random and wholesale imprisonment and the resulting breakdown of families and society, the endless humiliations of persons' minds, bodies, and surroundings, etc. It's all blatantly illegal under international law, but Israel disdains international law...and is able to get away with it wihout accountability. In that this is a medical site, I posit that Zionism, which has a chokehold on Israel (and on America...), has devolved into a full, criminally psychotic system of evil. Until that fact is realized, exposed, the illness diagnosed and treated, the Palestinians, and the world, will continue to suffer needlessly and tragically.
