Unique clinical training fellowship provides multi-disciplinary experience and exposure to medical innovation and commercialization

The Fogarty Institute for Innovation announced today that it has launched its Advanced Endovascular Training Fellowship. This unique, year-long clinical training program for postgraduate physicians, which begins July 1, 2012, will provide Fellows with broad exposure to all aspects of endovascular patient care, with an emphasis on interventional training. Fellows will also engage with the Fogarty Institute's early-stage medical device start-up companies and assist in the process of developing technologies to improve patient care.

"This fellowship provides the next generation of endovascular specialists with experience using state-of-the-art technologies, including PFO and ASD closure, advanced interventional imaging and distal and proximal embolic protection," said James Joye, D.O., director of the Fellowship Program and chief medical officer of the Fogarty Institute. "We are grateful for the generous support provided by the El Camino Hospital Foundation, El Camino Hospital's Heart & Vascular Institute and VIVA Physicians to make the fellowship a reality."

In addition to providing a salary and benefits to support the Fellows' education and training, the Fogarty Institute will match each Fellow with clinical advisors from different clinical disciplines, as well as an innovation and entrepreneurship advisor from the Fogarty Institute. During the fellowship, each Fellow will be encouraged to conduct research in their area of interest and author publications based on their findings.

"The addition of the Fellows' clinical perspective to the Fogarty Institute's innovative start-up companies will provide a rich environment, optimal for learning and collaboration," said Thomas J. Fogarty, M.D., chairman of the Fogarty Institute.

According to interventional cardiologist Bahman Nouri, M.D., a current Fellow, "The program has really helped me focus on my interventional vascular skills at a volume and tempo I would not have experienced in any other setting."

Criteria for the fellowship include completion of at least one year of specialty training in interventional cardiology, interventional radiology or vascular surgery. Applicants must be board-eligible or board-certified in their specialty. Interested physicians may apply online by Sunday, March 4, 2012, at www.fogartyinstitute.org. Those selected will be notified by the end of March.
