Thousands of Texans have Lyme disease, yet Texas patients are still being told there is no Lyme disease in Texas. To address this problem, the Texas Lyme Disease Association (TXLDA) has commissioned its first public service announcement to alert the Texas public that Lyme can infect them and their families. A separate short documentary highlighting Texans' cases will be screened at the first major private fundraiser held on behalf of the TXLDA this May, in conjunction with Lyme Disease Awareness Month. Both films were produced by Anita Long of Long Films Studio.
Many victims of Lyme in Texas experience similar problems: failure to gain a diagnosis in time for the disease to be treated by a shorter round of antibiotics; refusal on the part of Texas physicians to treat until symptoms are resolved; worsening symptoms, leading to disability and the need to seek expert treatment in other states. As of this date, only one physician's practice in the state of Texas specializes in Lyme disease. This is not enough to handle the current or rapidly growing number of cases. Lyme disease is an unrecognized epidemic.
Our May 10 luncheon will raise money for physician education.
It will be followed on November 10, 2012, by the first annual "Give Lyme the Boot" Walk to promote awareness and prevent new cases of the disease, at Discovery Green in downtown Houston.
