Likely 'decision day' moves to next week

Indications are the Supreme Court's much-anticipated ruling on the health law may come on Wednesday or Thursday. However, the court is also scheduled to hand down decisions on Monday.

The Supreme Court on Thursday indicated that it is likely to go into overtime next week, as the nation awaits its decisions in challenges to President Obama's health care law and a tough Arizona immigration law. … It is the chief justice's practice on the next-to-last day of the term to announce that the following session will be the final one. The last scheduled day for handing down decisions is Monday, and yet Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. made no announcement on Thursday that Monday would be the final day. That suggests that there will be at least one additional day for decisions next week after Monday. It is a good bet that the health care decision will come on the last day, which may be Wednesday or Thursday (Liptak, 6/21).

Another morning of Supreme Court opinions came and went Thursday with no ruling on the national health care law, pushing the court's most anticipated decision in years to the final week of June. The constitutionality of the national health care law, passed in 2010 without a single Republican vote, was challenged by 26 states that argued the law infringed upon states' rights and individual liberties. They contended the federal government could not compel citizens to purchase health insurance (Borchers, 6/21).
