The IOF Medal of Achievement has been presented today to Professor Adolfo Diez-Perez, MD, PhD, Head Emeritus of the Department of Internal Medicine, Hospital del Mar, Director of the Bone and Joint Research Unit at the Municipal Institute of Medical Research and Professor of Medicine at the Autonomous University of Barcelona.
The International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) awards the IOF Medal of Achievement every two years to honour an individual researcher who has significantly advanced the field of osteoporosis through original and outstanding scientific contributions.
The award was presented at a ceremony held during the European Congress on Osteoporosis & Osteoarthritis in Rome, Italy. Professor Cyrus Cooper, Chair of the IOF Committee of Scientific Advisors, presented the award, stating, "IOF established this prestigious award in 2006 in order to underline one of its most important missions - to increase understanding and awareness of osteoporosis and to promote medical innovation and improved care for patients. Through his work, Professor Diez-Perez has helped to advance our understanding of several aspects of osteoporosis, including epidemiology, clinical care of patients with osteoporosis, clinical assessment of bone quality and the genetics of osteoporosis."
Professor Diez-Perez is an active clinician and researcher who has published widely in peer-reviewed journals and is the author of more than 200 scientific articles. He is a member of the Research Network on Aging and Frailty (RETICEF) of the Instituto Carlos III, is member of the Board of Directors of the International Bone and Mineral Society and the Committee of Scientific Advisors of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. He has been in the past president of the Spanish Society of Bone and Mineral Research (SEIOMM) and the Spanish Society of Osteoporotic Fractures (SEFRAOS) and Associated Professor of the Johns Hopkins University (USA). Professor Diez has served as advisor of the WHO, member of the Board of Directors of the European Calcified Tissue Society and chair of the Working Group of Inadequate Response of the International Osteoporosis Foundation. He has also has been Visiting Scientist at the Creighton University in Omaha, NE (USA) and Senior Medical Advisor at the Lilly Research Laboratories in Indianapolis IN (USA). He is an expert reviewer for several general and specialised journals and various Research Agencies (FIS, European Research Council, Academy of Finland and British Research Council, among others).
