Chicago Lakeshore Hospital has been named a 2013 Top Performer for hospital-based inpatient psychiatric care by The Joint Commission, the leading accreditor of health care organizations in America. The hospital was one of just four mental health facilities in Illinois to be awarded and ranked as a Top Performer in The Joint Commission's Annual Report on Quality and Safety.

"Our highly trained staff and renowned doctors provide the best mental health treatment available," Chicago Lakeshore Hospital CEO Alan Eaks said. "This is a standard we intend to live up to year in and year out.  Our staff works very hard to provide the highest level of care."

The report recognizes hospitals for their exemplary performance in providing evidence-based treatment in the right way and at the right time.

Chicago Lakeshore's ranking was based on the following measures:

  • Lower rate for administering multiple medications
  • Improved justification for administering multiple medications
  • Continuing care plan created and transmitted
  • Lower ratios for restraints and seclusion

Hospitals receiving Top Performer designation must achieve a performance rate of 95 percent or more for each measure. Inpatient psychiatric services include care to a patient for a mental disorder while hospitalized in a psychiatric unit of an acute care hospital or a free-standing psychiatric hospital.

According to the report, Chicago Lakeshore has "demonstrated an exceptional commitment to quality improvement and is among the top performing hospitals to have achieved the outstanding performance required to be included" in the rankings.
