Golden Jubilee National Hospital holds performance review in public

Today, the Golden Jubilee National Hospital held its Annual Review, demonstrating that they have continued to lead the way in safe, effective and person centred care for the NHS in Scotland.

In 2013/2014, the Golden Jubilee exceeded its inpatient, day case and diagnostic targets by 14.7%, treating 26,975 individuals from across Scotland.

This was accompanied by a dramatic increase in activity for Ophthalmology, which has increased the number of patients treated by 342% since 2011/12.

The Orthopaedic service, one of the largest in the Europe, continued to expand, treating 6,233 patients, with approximately 55% of these being on a “see and treat” basis.

The Annual Review was chaired by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Alex Neil MSP, and also gave members of the public their opportunity to ask questions and have their voice heard to help shape the future of the services, as well as learn firsthand about improvements and accomplishments from the hospital.

Some of the highlights from 2013/2014:

• All patients were treated within their treatment guarantee time.
• 94% of inpatients gave a rating of between eight and 10 out of 10 for their overall experience of the Golden Jubilee National Hospital.
• The Golden Jubilee continued to have the fastest “door to balloon” time in the UK for providing lifesaving Angioplasty for heart attack patients.
• The number of life saving heart transplants has tripled in just one year.
• Lung cancer resection rates increased from 10% to 15% over the last five years, improving survival rates for patients.
• The Golden Jubilee continued to perform well against Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI) targets, reducing HAI across the site and achieving rates lower than the national targets.
• It was announced that the Board would now be leading on innovation on behalf of the NHS in Scotland.
• The number of complaints received in 2013/2014 was less than 0.1% of patient activity; learning from these complaints remains a key focus for the Board.
• The Board achieved its three financial targets for 2013/2014 and exceeded efficiency targets.

The Annual Review also highlighted that the clinical skills and research centre - The Beardmore Centre for Health Science - is continuing to support an increasing number of clinical trials and became one of only two selected UK sites to participate in the UK’s first gene therapy trial for advanced heart failure.

The Beardmore Hotel and Conference Centre was accepted into the world renowned International Association of Conference Centres – an international recognised symbol of quality and excellence in the conferencing industry. The venue also received Investors in People Gold Accreditation, VenueVerdict Gold Accreditation, the TripAdvisor Certificate of Excellence and picked up the Top Eco Hotel in Scotland at the prestigious AA Hospitality Awards.
