Medullan, Inc., a digital healthcare consultancy focused on improving the healthcare experience through human centered solutions, announced today a partnership with Altarum Institute to license the Altarum Consumer Engagement (ACE) Measure. Under the terms of the agreement, Medullan will have full commercial use of the ACE survey toolset for deployment in client engagements and other commercial deployments.

This collaboration is a strong strategic fit and will help Medullan to assess the health engagement levels of individuals and populations, through the ACE Measure tool. The ACE Measure is a 21-item survey that assesses four domains of health engagement: commitment, ownership, informed choice, and navigation. Each domain measures a different aspect of patient engagement, from everyday health behaviors, like diet and exercise, to a desire for shared decision making with providers.

Organizations can use the ACE Measure to:

  • Understand health engagement behavior in a population,
  • Improve the impact of health programs and communications by tailoring and targeting efforts, and
  • Monitor how engagement levels change over time.

The ACE Measure has been statistically validated in a number of studies for both internal psychometric quality and predictive strength of health outcomes. The validation results have been accepted for publication and are in press in the journal The Patient.

"Altarum's ACE Measure represents a large step forward in truly understanding the full spectrum of patient engagement and its impact," stated Ahmed Albaiti, CEO of Medullan. "By utilizing ACE, we can now focus healthcare organizations we work with on a deeper understanding of their populations and how to organize their digital efforts to achieve optimal outcomes for those under their care. We anticipate a variety of ACE-enhanced applications for innovative payers, providers, and employers."

"We're excited to partner with Medullan to utilize ACE Measure as they help their clients solve patient engagement challenges with proven metrics and pragmatic analytics," said Chris Duke, Director, Altarum's Center for Consumer Choice in Health Care. "As an independent healthcare systems research group, we're always looking for opportunities to apply ACE Measure in real-world situations, taking our work out of the lab and into the real world."
