The University of Chicago Medicine has signed a long-term lease for an 18,000-square-foot space in the South Loop that will offer primary care, cardiology, orthopedic, sports medicine and other medical and surgical specialties, as well as obstetrics-gynecology, reproductive and other select services for women.

The University of Chicago Medicine's Center for Advanced Care at South Loop is scheduled to open in late 2016 on the second level of Southgate Market at 1101 S. Canal St. The lease, brokered by CBRE Inc., covers 12 years with extension options.

Southgate Market has been a retail cornerstone in the South Loop since its inception in 2007. The three-story retail center is anchored by Whole Foods Market, DSW, PetSmart, Marshalls and LA Fitness, among other businesses. An estimated 132,000 people live or work in the South Loop, an area where the population is expected to grow 9 percent over the next five years.

"We listened to our patients who wanted our state-of-the-art care closer to where they live, work and shop," said Sharon O'Keefe, president of the University of Chicago Medical Center. "That's why we are excited to bring our physicians and nurses to the South Loop as we continually seek ways to improve access to superior care in various communities."

The South Loop clinic also will serve as a gateway to a full array of UChicago Medicine specialists at its Hyde Park campus. UChicago Medicine has a number of off-campus affiliations and partnerships to bring its specialists closer to Chicagoland communities. They include Silver Cross Hospital for cancer care and Little Company of Mary Hospital and Edward-Elmhurst Health for specialty pediatric care. In addition, UChicago Medicine recently broke ground for its Center for Advanced Care at Orland Park, which is set to open by early 2017.
