OmniVision Technologies, Inc., a leading developer of advanced digital imaging solutions, and FISBA AG, a world leader in customized optical components, systems and microsystems, today announced a new microcamera solution for life science applications. FISBA’s FISCam™ is a customizable microcamera with integrated illumination that comes in a compact package measuring less than 2 mm in diameter. This new microcamera uses OmniVision’s high-performance OV6946 CameraChip™ sensor to deliver striking images and video in 400 x 400 resolution even with the extremely small module size.

This innovative new module offers excellent image quality, compact size, and usability across a wide range of applications. The module’s utility is further enhanced by FISBA’s ability to customize use with either glass or polymer optics,” said Tehzeeb Gunja, senior marketing and business development manager at OmniVision. “We’re delighted to work alongside a company such as FISBA, with its rich history in optics and imaging technologies.”

“Working closely with OmniVision allowed us to produce a camera that is exceptionally small, yet still produces crystal clear images for innovative applications, including online analyses, process monitoring, authenticity control, determination of germ count, particle detection and counting and fast machine vision,” said Martin Forrer, CTO at FISBA. “We are constantly working with our customers to design components that meet their needs, not only in performance, but also in materials and in reliable and scalable production and assembly.”

Using an advanced 1.75-micron OmniBSI+™ pixel, the OV6946 captures high-quality 400 x 400 resolution images and video at 30 frames per second (FPS) with excellent color fidelity. The sensor’s 0.9 x 0.9 mm package size makes it ideally suited for ultra-compact camera modules.

The FISBA FISCam platform offers excellent optical performance, 120-degree field of view (diagonal) and homogenous illumination characteristics (LED). The platform is scheduled to be sampling in the second quarter of 2016, and is expected to enter volume production in the fourth quarter of 2016.

FISBA’s FISCam will be presented for the first time in the United States at the upcoming Photonics West conference in San Francisco from February 16 – 18.
