Brainwave opens a new facility in Birchwood

National charity Brainwave, which provides home based therapy programmes for children with cerebral palsy and other conditions such as development delay, is opening a third Centre in Birchwood, Warrington to cope with the increasing demand for its services.

The Centre will be headed up by Sue Shaw, who qualified as an Occupational Therapist in 1989 and has worked with children for the past 10 years in the NHS. Sue has a Diploma in Autism and is Bobath trained. Her special interests are Sensory Integration and Autism.

Sue is supported by Carole Williams and Emma Bidwell who are also Health Professional Council (HPC) registered. Carole qualified as a Physiotherapist in 1974 and has worked for 35 years in the NHS, the majority of the time with children with complex needs. She is Bobath and Halliwick trained and has knowledge of Sensory Integration Dysfunction. Carole’s particular interest is children with neurological problems, including Cerebral Palsy and Chromosomal Abnormalities.

Emma Bidwell qualified as a physiotherapist in January 2005 and, after completing rotations at both a junior and senior level, specialised in Paediatric Physiotherapy from 2007. Her work has predominantly been within the community and special schools setting, working with children with neurological and developmental, but she also brings with her some acute paediatric experience. Christine Cryne, Brainwave’s Chief Executive Officer, said “Our enquiries are growing at 30% year on year so the Trustees decided that we needed to expand. The families on our Programme have said how difficult it can be travelling long distances with children with disabilities so rather than expanding at our current Centres in Essex and Somerset, we chose to set up a new Centre on Warrington to reduce the travelling for families from the northern part of Britain”.
