KLAS survey reveals client confidence in athenaClinicals EHR

athenahealth, Inc. (NASDAQ: ATHN), a leading provider of internet-based business services to physician practices, today announced that according to a new KLAS report Ambulatory EMR: On Track for Meaningful Use?, athenaClinicalsSM, the Company’s web-based electronic health record (EHR) service offering, achieved 100% client confidence in its ability to enable them to meet 2011 Meaningful Use standards under the HITECH Act. For this report, KLAS interviewed 1,458 providers about 26 EMR solutions in order to determine EMRs’ ability to meet approaching 2011 meaningful use requirements as set by the HIT Policy Committee. Confidence in these solutions is a critical metric to EMR adoption as clients prepare for reimbursement bonus eligibility and compliance issues.

“We feel the KLAS survey results of extremely high levels of confidence from our national client base in athenahealth’s ability to allow them to meet emerging meaningful use standards further supports and demonstrates our differentiated business model as being truly aligned with clients’ financial and clinical outcomes”

The report, which was released January 6th, cites that the high vote of client confidence in athenaClinicals builds off athenahealth’s legacy and reputation for strong support and service with its revenue cycle management platform, and illustrates appeal for a results-based business model that is fully aligned with clients' financial and clinical outcomes. Ahead of the new guidelines that would hold providers accountable for their use of EMRs, in September 2009 athenahealth launched its Federal Stimulus Bonus Payment Guarantee Program guaranteeing that physicians who use its athenaClinicals service will receive a HITECH Act bonus payment under the 2011 program year.

We're glad to hear that physician-users of athenaClinicals are confident their product can deliver the goods. But really, is this worthy of a press release?

The information made available by KLAS for free didn't reveal whether any EHR in its study actually passed all 25 of the HHS certification criteria. I suppose if I paid for that, I could get the answer. Then again, I think I already know.

Look, it isn’t about how confident your users are, or how many issues an EHR vendor needs to solve before qualifying for a Gold Star from HHS. It only matters how quickly an EHR vendor can pulls it all off. One would think a nimble organization with a well-designed platform could move pretty quickly in this regard. Then again, one would think a well-managed big company with money to burn can do the same with an aggressive acquisition strategy and just generally throwing its weight around. In this regard, we'll be quite interested to see subsequent press releases from Athena.

    Thank you,
