Flexpoint to develop infant bed cover using patented Bend Sensor® design

Flexpoint Sensor Systems, Inc. (OTCBB: FLXT) announced that they are working on the development of an infant bed cover using their patented Bend Sensor® design. The mattress will be used to monitor infants in the prevention of sudden infant death syndrome (“SIDS”).

Sudden infant death syndrome is the primary cause of death in healthy babies in the US. According to sidsfamilies.com, “Many more children die of SIDS in a year than all who die of cancer, heart disease, pneumonia, child abuse, AIDS, cystic fibrosis and muscular dystrophy combined, striking 1-2 children for every 1000 live births. Most deaths from SIDS occur by the end of the sixth month with the greatest number taking place between two and four months of age. A SIDS death occurs quickly, and is often associated with sleep, with no signs of suffering.” With US birthrates of approximately 4,140,000 in 2005, this amounts to approximately 5-8000 deaths per year from SIDS in the US alone. It is estimated that there were approximately 130 million births worldwide in 2005.

The application of the Bend Sensor® in a mattress cover allows parents to monitor the position and movement of an infant and will facilitate the triggering of an alarm system if no movement is detected for a predetermined interval, or if the infant has significantly changed position. This seems to be an ideal fit since the Bend Sensor® operation requires movement to monitor and register change.
