In the spirit of National Volunteer Week, the Canadian Diabetes Association would like to send a sincere message of gratitude to the more than 35,000 community and professional volunteers who selflessly give their time each and every day to help advance the battle against diabetes. Thanks to the significant efforts and commitment of our volunteers - the Association was able to deliver diabetes education programs to hundreds of thousands of Canadians this past year; raise funds to benefit those living with diabetes; develop world-class clinical practice guidelines and healthcare resources; and advocate on behalf of the more than 3 million Canadians living with diabetes.

"Our community and professional volunteers are vital and make it possible for the Canadian Diabetes Association to provide outstanding programs and services, research support and advocacy to the millions of people across Canada living with diabetes," said Ellen Malcolmson, President & CEO, Canadian Diabetes Association. "We are grateful for the time and expertise they share with us and in the communities they serve."

Volunteers such as Shawn Shepheard, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes 13 years ago and has been an active volunteer with the Association ever since. Shawn also provides his expertise as a member and ambassador of the diabetes community to the Association's National Advocacy Leadership Council. Shawn's determination to manage his own diabetes is an inspiration to others as he uses his personal experiences, triumphs and volunteer work to help people living with diabetes.

"Volunteering with the Association has been a constant source of inspiration for me to live well," said Shawn. "I've had the opportunity to meet and help so many passionate, caring people from all walks of life living across Canada. The rewards I receive from volunteering are endless."

Volunteer opportunities include hosting your own fundraiser for Diabetes Summer Surge (coming in May), helping to educate people in your community about living well with diabetes or supporting our professional initiatives.
