For many, the battle with nasal congestion can linger beyond spring allergy season and into the summer months. As the first day of summer approaches, the makers of ARM & HAMMER Simply Saline, the #1 brand of saline-based nasal mists, conducted a nationwide survey to uncover how summertime congestion and illness can interfere with outdoor fun and family vacations. The survey of 1,000 people revealed the following results:

  • More than half of those surveyed (51%) admitted they had caught a summer cold in the past year
  • A 65% majority were unaware that the types of viruses most often associated with winter colds are different from the types of viruses that are most associated with summer colds
  • 45% said that being congested or having cold-like symptoms would prevent them from going outside on a nice summer day
  • One in four surveyed shared that they'd likely skip a day at the beach or pool (29%) or sporting event (25%) because of congestion or a summer cold
  • Interestingly, women were more likely to say they would skip a sporting event, while men would be most likely to skip a day at the beach or pool
  • Willingness to go outdoors while under the weather varied greatly across the country, with half of those in the West (51%) and South (50%) claiming that congestion/illness in the summer would prevent them from going outdoors, while significantly smaller percentages shared the same sentiment in the Northeast (40%) and Midwest (35%)

When asked about clearing their congestion, 56% of those surveyed said they were aware that using a drug-free saline spray could naturally help clear nasal congestion, moisturize nasal passageways and could be used every day. Dr. Travis Stork, ER physician and host of the Emmy® award-winning talk show "The Doctors," agrees, adding that, "Many adults are congested year-round, and using drug-free products derived from natural ingredients can be an extremely effective way to clear nasal congestion without side effects."
