AAP can offer pediatricians to discuss impact of government shutdown on children

NewsGuard 100/100 Score

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) can offer pediatricians from across the country with diverse expertise to discuss the impact of the government shutdown on children. Pediatricians can speak to the on-the-ground impact of the shutdown on federally funded programs such as WIC and Head Start; can contextualize the national position of the AAP to Congress; and can provide local perspectives on why the shutdown is especially harmful to vulnerable children and families.

In addition, more than a dozen pediatrician leaders, including AAP President Thomas K. McInerny, MD, FAAP, and other federal child health policy experts, will convene in Washington, DC Oct. 5-6 and go up to Capitol Hill on Oct. 7 to urge Congress to find a new way forward for children in the budget process. In-person interviews and photo opportunities are possible with this group of pediatricians during this time period, in addition to the ongoing availability of spokespeople to discuss the shutdown.

Please bring this story with you to Congress:

Please see this Live Interview link we did yesterday on National TV MSNBC.  We are parents from Columbia, SC, and my daughter's life is in the balance.

MSNBC:  The shutdown's potentially life or death consequences for a three year old little girl.

As parents, we are even more pressed now to raise the funds needed on our own ($2.5M in 9 months) knowing that the Government processing of NIH grants being sought are being backlogged.  In addition, FDA not fully staffed causes delays in dependent project tasks to keep the Clinical Trial on schedule.  With the degenerative rapidly progressing nature of this disease (Sanfilippo Syndrome Type A), we do not have the luxury of time, and weeks or months could be the difference between life or death for my daughter. We plead of you to pass this on to your colleagues and Washington if possible.

    Thank you,
