New evidence suggests that using advanced genetics technologies to monitor for remaining cancer cells after treatment may soon become an effective tool to inform treatment decisions and ultimately predict patient outcomes for patients with a particularly aggressive form of acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL).

Pharmacyclics submits ibrutinib NDA to FDA for two B-cell malignancies

Pharmacyclics, Inc. today announced that it has submitted a New Drug Application to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for the investigational oral Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitor, ibrutinib, for two relapsed/refractory B-cell malignancy indications: mantle cell lymphoma and chronic lymphocytic leukemia/small lymphocytic lymphoma.

Research finding may offer novel path for cancer drug design

Genetic mutations aren't the only thing that can keep a protein called PTEN from doing its tumor-suppressing job. Johns Hopkins researchers have now discovered that four small chemical tags attached (reversibly) to the protein's tail can have the same effect, and they say their finding may offer a novel path for drug design to keep PTEN working.

Researchers discover new class of antimalarial compounds

Despite renewed global efforts for eradication, malaria continues to exert devastating effects on human health. An estimated 220 million people are infected each year by malaria-causing Plasmodium parasites, which are transmitted by the bite of an infected mosquito. This enormous infection burden leads to some 660,000 lives lost to malaria each year, the majority of these young children in sub-Saharan Africa. While a vaccine to prevent malaria remains elusive, we depend on antimalarial compounds both to treat infections and prevent disease.

Immunocore, GSK partner for cancer targeting ImmTACs

Immunocore Limited, the Oxford-based biotechnology company developing novel biological drugs called ImmTACs to treat cancer and viral disease, today announced it has entered into a partnership with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) for multiple novel targets not addressable using antibody-based technologies. TGA of Australia approves Vertex Pharmaceuticals' KALYDECO for cystic fibrosis

Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated today announced that the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia has approved KALYDECO (ivacaftor) for people with cystic fibrosis ages 6 and older who have at least one copy of the G551D mutation in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator gene.

These erratic, small extra nuclei, which contain fragments or whole chromosomes that were not incorporated into daughter cells after cell division, are associated with specific forms of cancer and are predictive of poorer prognosis.

Multiple pregnancies conceived after IVF associated with increased breast cancer risk

Women who give birth to multiple babies following IVF treatment are at a higher risk of breast cancer than those giving birth to singletons or who remain childless. Dutch investigators from the Omega study group said the explanation may not be the multiple pregnancy per se but a maternal trait related to a higher implantation potential and to breast cancer itself.
