Loyola’s MNSON professor selected as 2012 Power of Nursing Leadership SAGE award winner

Judith Jennrich, PhD, RN, ACNP, associate professor, Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing (MNSON), has been selected as a 2012 Power of Nursing Leadership SAGE award winner. The SAGE award honors nurses who mentor and support leaders of today while looking for ways to guide nurse leaders of tomorrow. Dr. Jennrich will be recognized at the 15th Annual Power of Nursing Leadership celebration on Friday, Nov. 2, in Chicago.

Study finds risk factors for weight problems among children in the US and England

With ties to diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol, childhood obesity in wealthy countries is certainly of growing concern to researchers. A new study explores the ties between childhood weight problems, socioeconomic status, and nationality and finds that race, ethnicity, and immigrant status are risk factors for weight problems among children in the US and England.

Migraine headaches in children linked to behavioral difficulties

Kids who get migraine headaches are much more likely than other children to also have behavioral difficulties, including social and attention issues, and anxiety and depression. The more frequent the headaches, the greater the effect, according to research out now in the journal Cephalagia, published by SAGE.

The World Health Organization estimates that in 2011 there were 216 million cases of malaria and 34.2 million people living with HIV. These diseases particularly afflict sub-Saharan Africa, where large incidence of co-infection result in high mortality rates. Yet, in spite of this global pandemic, interactions between the parasite that causes malaria, Plasmodium falciparum, and HIV-1 are poorly understood.
