Columbia University launched three-year Doctor of Medicine program for PhD biological scientists

Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (P&S) has launched a three-year Doctor of Medicine (MD) program for PhD-trained biological scientists. The accelerated curriculum prepares graduates for physician-scientist careers that combine their knowledge of fundamental biomedical science with an understanding of how diseases and their treatments affect humans.

Cell Therapeutics agrees to sell 15,000 shares of Series 18 Preferred Stock to Quogue Capital

Cell Therapeutics, Inc. today announced that it has agreed to sell 15,000 shares of its Series 18 Preferred Stock directly to Quogue Capital LLC and an affiliate of Perceptive Advisors LLC in a registered direct offering conducted without an underwriter or placement agent for gross proceeds of approximately $15 million (the "Offering").

Cardiologist receives $1.9M grant from PCORI to study mHealth services

Richard Katz, M.D., Bloedorn Professor of Cardiology, professor of medicine, and director of the division of cardiology at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS), has been awarded $1.9 million by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) for a three-year project to study the combined use of mobile phones and community health workers to enhance patient management of chronic disease.

Since the sequence map of the human genome, the cost of sequencing the genome of an individual has fallen rapidly. This has resulted in a tremendous increase in the amount of human genomic data available to the international research community for the advancement of biomedical research. Yet, there is an absence of international mechanisms to support researchers in ensuring ethical and legal interoperability. In addition, the multiplicity and diversity of laws, standards and policies on sharing and accessing genetic and medical data represent major hurdles to international collaboration.

Merlin and Hippo proteins interact to begin chain of events that control tissue growth

Johns Hopkins researchers have figured out the specific job of a protein long implicated in tumors of the nervous system. Reporting on a new study described in the Sept. 12 issue of the journal Cell, they detail what they call the "matchmaking" activities of a fruit fly protein called Merlin, whose human counterpart, NF2, is a tumor suppressor protein known to cause neurofibromatosis type II when mutated.
