One of the goals of the European Research Council, ERC, is to bring the world's leading researchers to work in Europe. American Juleen Zierath is one of those who have received funds from the ERC. She found the best environment for her research at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden.

2011 Clinical Congress of American College of Surgeons to take place in October, in San Francisco

The 2011 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons—one of the largest international meetings of surgeons in the world—will convene October 23-27, 2011, in San Francisco, CA. The San Francisco Hilton will serve as the headquarters hotel for the meeting, and the Moscone Convention Center will house the scientific panel sessions and courses, as well as all scientific and technical exhibits.

Only one out of more than 1,900 people evaluated met the American Heart Association definition of ideal cardiovascular health, according to a new study led by researchers at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Their findings were recently published online in Circulation.

Study reports 9,500 injuries, 100 deaths related to crib products in the U.S.

Parents and caregivers have traditionally relied on cribs, playpens and bassinets to protect children while they sleep. The massive crib recalls followed by the announcement in December 2010 by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission to ban drop-side cribs have caused many families to question the safety of these products.

Early diagnosis can delay or halt progression of macular degeneration

February is Age-related Macular Degeneration and Low Vision Awareness month, providing an opportunity to inform and educate the public on the leading cause of vision loss for adults over the age of 65. Today, over 15 million of these adults suffer from age-related macular degeneration, a number that is expected to grow considerably as the baby boomer generation begins heading into retirement age. While the risks are growing, awareness and education is key to treating and saving the eyesight of millions.

Today, at its Annual Meeting, the American Association of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) announced a partnership with Gateway EDI to provide claims processing and revenue management services to its membership. The AAOS Revenue Management Program powered by Gateway EDI will help AAOS members submit their claims faster and more accurately to increase revenue and cash flow.

A study by the University of the Basque Country has carried out the first Spanish study into the emotional differences between the sexes and generations in terms of forgiveness. According to the study, parents forgive more than children, while women are better at forgiving than men.

Kaiser Permanente received the highest customer loyalty ranking in the health insurance sector, based on the Satmetrix 2011 Net Promoter® industry rankings. A new addition to this year's benchmarks, Kaiser Permanente received a Net Promoter Score, or NPS® of 28 percent, more than 30 points higher than the industry average of negative 5 percent.

Deep brain stimulation therapy promising against severe OCD

When obsessive-compulsive disorder is of crippling severity and drugs and behavior therapy can't help, there has been for just over a year a thread - or rather a wire - of hope. By inserting a thin electrode deep into the brain, doctors can precisely deliver an electrical current to a cord of the brain's wiring and soften the severity of the symptoms. "Deep brain stimulation" therapy for OCD won Food and Drug Administration approval in 2009 for extreme cases under its humanitarian device exemption.
