Cell Therapeutics, Inc. today announced the European Medicines Agency Pediatric Committee recommended the Company submit an updated Pediatric Investigation Plan for pixantrone following discussions with the Company about the preclinical and clinical pixantrone data, including PIX301, and the desire to explore the potential benefits pixantrone may offer to children with hematologic cancer.

Semafore Pharmaceuticals today announced the presentation of data demonstrating that SF1126, a novel small molecule inhibitor of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K) and mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), has broad preclinical anti-tumor activity in multiple myeloma and lymphoma. Acorda Therapeutics to initiate Phase 1 clinical trial of GGF2 for heart failure in mid-2010

Acorda Therapeutics, Inc. today announced plans to initiate a Phase 1 single-dose clinical trial of the Company's compound, Glial Growth Factor 2 (GGF2), in patients with heart failure in mid-2010, based on an IND filed with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on March 19, 2010. GGF2 has been shown to protect heart muscle and restore cardiac function in preclinical models of heart failure, myocardial infarction and cardiotoxicity.

RANKL inhibition may prove effective in treatment of human malignancy, suggests study

Amgen today announced results of a preclinical study demonstrating a positive response to administration of RANK-Fc against mammary tumor formation in mouse models. OPG-Fc and RANK-Fc bind to and block the action of RANKL. These molecules have a comparable mechanism of action to denosumab. The study was presented today in a late-breaking abstract at the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) 101st Annual Meeting 2010 in Washington, D.C.

NanoBio to develop intranasal vaccine for HBV

NanoBio® Corporation today announced an initiative to develop an intranasal vaccine for the treatment of hepatitis B (HBV). Study underscores potential for VBL Therapeutics VB-111 as broad-spectrum cancer therapy

VBL Therapeutics today announced positive results from preclinical and Phase 1 studies evaluating the company's lead anti-cancer agent, VB-111 - a first-in-class, targeted biological agent shown to work via dual-action, anti-angiogenic and vascular disruptive mechanism of action - in metastatic cancer. Preclinical data evaluating VB-111 in a comprehensive set of in vivo studies employing the Lewis Lung metastasis mouse model showed the compound to be safe and specific, with a 90% reduction in tumor burden of lung metastases after only one injection.

Statin use may increase risk of developing benign colorectal tumors: APC trial

Statins did not protect patients against colorectal adenomas, which are benign precursors of colorectal cancer, according to results of a secondary analysis of the Adenoma Prevention with Celecoxib trial. In a population at high-risk for developing these lesions, results of this analysis suggested statin use may increase the risk of developing benign colorectal tumors.

NanoImaging Services receives grant to develop methods for characterization of nanoparticle morphology

NanoImaging Services, Inc., announced today that it has received a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant from the National Institutes of Health through the National Center for Research Resources to develop new methods for quantitative characterization of nanoparticle morphology and aggregation state using transmission electron microscopy.
