LEAPS vaccine technology generates dendritic cells to stimulate immune system to fight viral illnesses

Rare human antibodies protect mice from lethal strains of influenza

Scientists have identified a new, highly conserved molecular target on the influenza A virus and demonstrated that human antibodies against this target are protective in animal models of seasonal and highly-pathogenic avian influenza. The work was conducted by researchers at Theraclone Sciences, with collaborators at University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Tokyo and Johns Hopkins University; and is reported this week in the online Early Edition of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

St. Jude Children's Research Hospital is ranked as one of the top institutions in the annual "Best Places to Work in Academia" list by The Scientist magazine. This is the fifth consecutive year St. Jude made the publication's top 10 list of institutions in the United States. The hospital ranks second in the country behind Princeton University.

Researchers in The Netherlands believe they are on the verge of developing a simple, prenatal blood test that would be able to detect accurately chromosomal abnormalities in the developing foetus. At present, the only reliable way to do this is through amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling, both of which are invasive and carry the risk of triggering a miscarriage.

Astellas Pharma Inc. announced that the company presented results from a Japanese Phase 2 study conducted with ASP1941, a selective SGLT2 inhibitor, at the 70th Scientific Sessions of the American Diabetes Association (ADA) on June 26, 2010 (EST). ASP1941 is designed to block the re-absorption of glucose in the kidney and excrete glucose in the urine.
