Glan Clwyd Hospital N Wales invest in Esaote's G-Scan MRI unit for weight-bearing scanning

Glan Clwyd Hospital in North Wales has become the first publicly-funded hospital in the UK to invest in Esaote’s G-scan Brio, an open, weight-bearing MRI unit for musculoskeletal scanning. In an innovative move, the hospital can now scan patients in any position, from standing vertically to the traditional supine postition laying flat.

Fairview Southdale Hospital in Edina, Minn., improved its advanced imaging capabilities and patient comfort by installing the first 16-channel Vantage Titan 1.5T scalable system from Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. Lilly, Avid receive FDA approval for Amyvid to treat Alzheimer's

Eli Lilly and Company and Avid Radiopharmaceuticals, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Lilly, today announced the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approval of Amyvid, a radioactive diagnostic agent indicated for brain imaging of beta-amyloid plaques in patients with cognitive impairment who are being evaluated for Alzheimer's Disease and other causes of cognitive decline.

Animal-assisted therapy reduces anxiety in patients undergoing MRI: Study

Patients who undergo MRI often suffer from elevated anxiety. Patient discomfort may cause poor image quality due to motion artifacts or early termination. Anxiolytic medications are currently used to reduce this anticipated anxiety , but animal-assisted therapy may be a non-invasive alternative treatment with fewer adverse effects, according to an exhibit being presented at the 2011 American Roentgen Ray Society's annual meeting.

New study finds PEM reduces unnecessary breast biopsies

The Radiology journal released new data from an NIH-sponsored, multi-site study of hundreds of women with newly diagnosed breast cancer that shows Positron Emission Mammography (PEM) may reduce unnecessary breast biopsies. The study found that PEM was significantly more precise at identifying benign and cancerous lesions, in what scientists call "Positive Predictive Value" or "PPV," therefore reducing the number of unnecessary biopsies.
