New ways to tackle diabetes

According to a new analysis from UK, a diet rich in green leafy vegetables may reduce the risk of developing diabetes. The inference was drawn from six studies which looked into fruit and vegetable intake and found that only food including spinach and cabbage was found to have a significant positive effect. The findings were published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ).

Researchers at Montana State University have developed six new biomedical technologies that could have applications for treating antibiotic resistant infections, fungal infections and viral infections; boosting humans' innate immunity and improving scientists' ability to study such compounds. Biogen Idec and Knopp Neurosciences today announced they have entered into an exclusive, worldwide license agreement under which Biogen Idec will develop and commercialize KNS-760704 (dexpramipexole) for the treatment of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and potentially other indications.

Xcelligence System provides real-time detection of neuronal cell death

Time course analyses of neuronal cell death and its underlying mechanisms require laborious experiments and multiple endpoint assays, often involving labelling with irritating compounds and cell disruption. A recent study used the xCELLigence System of Roche to investigate the response of the neuronal-like cell line HT-22 and cultured primary rat cortical neurons to different cell death stimuli and neuroprotectants.

Lilly to halt development of potential Alzheimer's disease drug semagacestat

Eli Lilly and Company will halt development of semagacestat, a gamma secretase inhibitor being studied as a potential treatment for Alzheimer's disease, because preliminary results from two ongoing long-term Phase III studies showed it did not slow disease progression and was associated with worsening of clinical measures of cognition and the ability to perform activities of daily living.

Zebrafish-yeast approach for studying copper deficiency, complex multifactorial diseases

Copper deficiency diseases can be devastating. Symptoms can range from crippling neurological degeneration in Menkes disease ,a classic copper deficiency disease to brittle bones, anaemia and defective skin pigmentation in gastric bypass patients. Unfortunately, very little is known about how the body uses this essential nutrient. Knowing that melanocytes (the cells that give rise to hair, skin and eye pigmentation) are dramatically affected by the effects of copper deficiency, Elizabeth Patton from the University of Edinburgh, UK, and other colleagues from UK and US based labs decided to find out how melanocytes metabolise copper.

Global vaccine sales up 16% in 2009, report says

Global vaccine sales "grew by a healthy 16 percent last year, when sales shot up to $22.1 billion, healthcare market research publisher Kalorama Information reported Friday," according to the Associated Press. Kalorama is also forecasting sales "will rise at a compound annual rate of 9.7 percent during the next five years," (Johnson, 8/14).

AMRI announced today that it has been selected as the inaugural winner of the Pfizer Route Design Innovation Award, beating out 40 companies who were invited to share innovative ideas for process chemistry and large scale Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient production. Pfizer will present the company with the award at the AMRI 2010 Integrated Drug Discovery Symposium to be held in Albany NY, October 13-14. AMRI will also receive an honorarium for its win.

Belatacept study data to be presented at 23rd International Congress of The Transplantation Society

Bristol-Myers Squibb Company announced today that belatacept, an investigational selective T cell co-stimulation blocker being studied for use in solid organ transplantation, will be the subject of seven oral clinical presentations related to kidney transplantation at the 23rd International Congress of The Transplantation Society, being held August 15-19, 2010, in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. For the second quarter of 2010, the Company reported a net loss of $6.4 million, compared with a net loss of $6.1 million for the same period last year. Cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities as of June 30, 2010 were $19.5 million.
