Vera and Paul Guerin Family Congenital Heart Program to be established in Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute

In an effort to lengthen the life span and improve the quality of life for those born with heart defects, longtime Cedars-Sinai supporters Vera and Paul Guerin have donated $10 million to establish the Vera and Paul Guerin Family Congenital Heart Program in the Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute.

Children's National receives grant to identify early signs of prenatal brain injury caused by CHD

Children's National Medical Center has received a five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health to identify reliable early signs of prenatal brain injury caused by congenital heart disease. Catherine Limperopoulos, PhD, Director of the Advanced Pediatric Brain Imaging Research Laboratory at Children's National will lead the study.

A mutation in a gene crucial to normal heart development could play a role in some types of congenital heart disease-the most common birth defect in the U.S. The finding, from a team in The Research Institute at Nationwide Children's Hospital, could help narrow the search for genes that contribute to this defect, which affects as many as 40,000 newborns a year.

Children with congenital heart disease require higher levels of Vitamin D intake prior to surgery

Until now, there has been no research dedicated to the importance of Vitamin D supplementation in children with congenital heart disease (CHD). However, over the past few years, researchers at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) Research Institute and Cardiovascular Surgery Program teamed with the Canadian Critical Care Trials Group to understand the impact of cardiac surgery on the Vitamin D status of infants and children, to be printed next month in Anesthesiology.

Mayo Clinic has announced the first U.S. stem cell clinical trial for pediatric congenital heart disease. The trial aims to determine how stem cells from autologous umbilical cord blood can help children with hypoplastic left heart syndrome, a rare defect in which the left side of the heart is critically underdeveloped.

Many of these defects can be repaired though surgery, but researchers don't understand what causes them or how to prevent them. New research shows that about 10 percent of these defects are caused by genetic mutations that are absent in the parents of affected children.
