Trauma care in the U.S. is fragmented, overwhelmed and underfunded: American College of Surgeons 2009 Clinical Congress

AMERICAN COLLEGE OF SURGEONS 2009 Clinical Congress, October 11-15, 2009 -- Trauma care in the United States is so fragmented, overwhelmed and underfunded that the survival and recovery of those who suffer major trauma often depends on where they happen to be when they are injured. That was the conclusion voiced today during a signature speech at the 2009 Clinical Congress of the American College of Surgeons in Chicago.

More than 600,000 seniors and people with disabilities will be required to choose new healthcare coverage during the upcoming Medicare annual enrollment because their current plan is being eliminated. However, millions more could benefit by changing to a plan that better fits their needs, according to Allsup, a nationwide provider of Social Security disability representation and Medicare services.

National Vaccine Information Center to launch a research fundraising campaign

At the Oct. 2-4, 2009 Fourth International Public Conference on Vaccination sponsored by the non-profit National Vaccine Information Center in Reston, VA, 700 citizens from 44 states and 11 nations raised more than $100,000 to launch an international scientific research fundraising campaign to investigate health differences between vaccinated and unvaccinated children and identify those at risk for suffering vaccine injury.

Report shows that visual impairments are associated with the risk of death in older adults

Visual problems that cannot be corrected are associated with increased risk of death among individuals between the ages of 49 and 74, and all visual impairments may be associated with the risk of death in older adults, according to a report in the October issue of Archives of Ophthalmology, one of the JAMA/Archives journals.
