TESARO secures $60 million in start-up funding to acquire, develop and commercialize cancer therapeutics

TESARO, Inc., an oncology-focused biopharmaceutical company, today announced that it has secured $60 million in start-up funding to acquire, develop and commercialize cancer therapeutics and supportive care products. Participants in a $20 million Series A financing included New Enterprise Associates (NEA) and TESARO management; additionally, NEA has reserved $40 million to support company growth.

Restanza shows greater efficacy against species of Plasmodium that cause malaria

Advanced Life Sciences Holdings, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company engaged in the discovery, development and commercialization of novel drugs in the therapeutic areas of infection, oncology and respiratory diseases, today announced positive results from in vitro and in vivo studies assessing the efficacy of Restanza (cethromycin), its novel oral antibiotic, against the species of Plasmodium that cause malaria.

Logical Therapeutics, Inc., a private, clinical stage biopharmaceutical company, announced today it had closed on a $16.9 million Series C equity financing. The round was led by existing investor SV Life Sciences, and included Burrill & Company, Novo A/S and Novitas Capital.

CTRC starts enrolment in Phase 2 combination trial of REOLYSIN and gemcitabine for advanced pancreatic cancer

Oncolytics Biotech Inc. announced today that the Cancer Therapy & Research Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio (CTRC) has started patient enrolment in a U.S. Phase 2 clinical trial using intravenous administration of REOLYSIN(R) in combination with gemcitabine (Gemzar(R)) in patients with advanced pancreatic cancer. The Principal Investigator is Dr. Monica Mita of the CTRC.

Nymox Pharmaceutical Corporation is pleased to report positive new results from the 30-36 month follow-up study of patients treated with NX-1207 in Study NX02-0016. The initial study, completed in the U.S. in 2007, reached statistical significance in Intent-to-Treat Primary Efficacy outcomes at 90 days and 6 months post-treatment with NX-1207 2.5 mg.

The team found that increasing levels of the protein (called GGA3) prevented the accumulation of an enzyme linked to Alzheimer's. Researchers on Monday at the International Microbicides Conference in Pittsburgh continued to present data on HIV prevention research, Reuters reports. The news service outlines several prevention methods being researched, including an intravaginal ring that over time releases two antiretrovirals - dapivirine and maraviroc - for up to a month, and a vaginal tablet that time-releases the antiretrovirals dapivirine and DS003 for up to 12 hours.

NIDDK awards Albert Einstein College of Medicine $9.5M for continuation of Diabetes Research and Training Center

The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has awarded Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University a five-year, $9.5 million grant for the continuation of its Diabetes Research and Training Center (DRTC). The DRTC was also awarded a $632,000 supplemental grant for equipment and additional pilot and feasibility studies through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), bringing total NIH support to $10,177,000.

Reuters reports that 150 academic researchers touring the U.S. to make recommendations on diuretics and best and cheapest practices for blood pressure medicine have reported a 23 percent increase in patients who get the recommended drugs, "twice the increase in the U.S. over the same period."
