Muscular dystrophy: $1M grant for study of erectile dysfunction drugs in improving muscle blood flow

A Cedars-Sinai Heart Institute cardiologist has been awarded a three-year, nearly $1 million grant from the Muscular Dystrophy Association (MDA) to study whether drugs used to treat erectile dysfunction could also be used to improve muscle blood flow and reduce fatigue in muscular dystrophy patients.

USPTO allows Pisgah Labs' patent application regarding imipramine pamoate

Pisgah Labs, a drug product development company and an active pharmaceutical ingredient manufacturer (API) located in western North Carolina, has received a patent allowance in a series of patent applications. The US Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO) has notified Pisgah Labs, Inc. that a patent application related to a therapeutically significant family of pharmaceutical polymorphic compositions of imipramine pamoate has been allowed. The patent application also includes methods of manufacturing, purifying and use in pharmaceutical preparations.

If you're older, a woman, and suffering from either dementia or diabetes, you are the most likely to be exposed to unsubsidized medication costs in the US. This is known as the coverage gap for enrollees of Medicare Part D - the US federal program which subsidizes the cost of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries.

Changing drug therapy can help breast cancer patients get full benefit of tamoxifen treatment

Recently published research has shown that some breast cancer patients taking tamoxifen may not be getting the full benefit of their treatment because they have also been taking selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, prescribed drugs that inhibit the effect of an important enzyme.

Traversa Therapeutics, sanofi-aventis sign agreement for development of PTD-DRBD RNAi delivery technology

Traversa Therapeutics announced today the signing of a research agreement with sanofi-aventis for the validation and development of Traversa’s RNAi delivery technology: PTD-DRBD. Under the agreement, the companies will study short interfering RNA (siRNA) complexed to PTD-DRBD, with the ultimate goal of developing drugs using this technology.

Politico: "Congress completed its work Thursday night on the broadest social legislation in almost a half-century, as the House capped the year-long legislative saga over health reform by signing off on a package of fixes to the newly minted law. In the end, the titanic battle over remaking the American health care system drew to a close on a pair of votes drained of suspense - after the Senate approved the clean-up bill earlier Thursday. The House approved the clean-up bill, 220 to 207" (Budoff Brown, 3/25).
